Day 21 - Monday 12th of May

Today is day 21 of my blog (Monday 12th May)

Today is a happy day, yet a sad day too. Today marks the twenty-first day of my blog, the final day! Although I am happy that I have finally reached my goal, I am also dismal because I have enjoyed doing the blog. To commemorate the last day of the blog, I decided to do what some people consider the ultimate challenge to make a difference, the 40 hour famine! So, last week we got our booklets from our class councillor, and I immediately proceeded to fill it out with all of my details. After that, all that was left to do was to decided what I would be giving up and to sign up onto the website and join our school group. Today I finally had the time to sign up online, using my account from last year, and I finally managed to think of something to give up! I decided to give up my phone for 40 hours, which will be very difficult! I hope that I am able to survive that long!

What I did: Today for my task I signed up for the 40 hour famine and started to get sponsors.

Results: I think the results of the 40 hour famine will be enormous! Raising $40 is enough to buy a goat for breeding which will help support a family of five.

Reflection: I felt good about what I did today. This is because I know that I am doing a good that will make a change in the world. I really admire world vision, the creators of the 40 hour famine, because they have passion, and a vision. With this passion, they strive to make a difference for the better in third world countries suffering drought, poverty and sickness. I feel really avid to join this great cause, as I believe that everyone should should have the opportunity to live a healthy lifestyle. I have been doing the famine for a number of years, and I will continue to do it for a long time. I hope that I can inspire people to also do the famine, and to do other things to help others.

Day 20 - Sunday 11th of May

Today is day 20 of my blog (Sunday 11th May)

So, by now I've been running out of ideas for my blog, but I guess this was kind of expected, I mean, there's only two days left until my blog is over! Today I decided to redo an old task, the task from day 13, which was to hang out the washing instead of using the dryer. We washed the clothes in the morning, after predicting that the weather was going to be really good today. Our prediction was right because it was really sunny and beautiful today, and the clothes dried quickly. We even managed to fit in another load of washing!

What I did: Today for my task my family and I hung out the washing on the line instead of drying it in the dryer, which is a good way to save energy.

Result: Today's results were quite successful as we were able to hang out 2 loads of washing, and fully dry them at the same time.

Reflection: Today I felt good about what I did. I know that I'm saving energy by hanging out the washing, which is environmentally friendly. I think that the bill will be a lot more expensive if we did use the dryer regularly, instead of hanging out the washing, which we usually do. We have taken in the clothes from the line, and now need to fold them and put them away. I think that this task is easy, efficient and simple, making it a great task to do, although it is also a bit time consuming.

Day 19 - Saturday 10th of May

Today is day 19 of my blog (Saturday 19th May)

A few days ago, I was listening to the radio and one of the songs they played, which wasn't really a song, was this really influential poem called look up. It's about how today society relies so much on our digital devices, how we think we're being so social on websites and apps, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, that we don't realise that in fact, we are actually being even more anti-social. It's about putting down your phone, or iPad, or whatever digital device you have, and going out into the world, talk to people, interact with one another. This poem really inspired me, so today, I used the least amount of technology I could. I didn't bring my phone to Chinese class, I didn't use the computer or turn on the T.V. when I got home, and I didn't even go on the iPad. Instead I found other means of entertainment, such as reading books, reading the newspaper and talking. It wasn't too difficult because my dad's side of the family came over for dinner, and I just talked to them, though, the T.V. did come one when they wanted to watch "The Voice Australia".

What I did: I used the least amount of technology as I could, whether it be T.V., computer, or iPad.

Result: Again, this task won't have a very large result at the moment, because it's just one day out of thirty-one days.

Reflection: I felt good about what I did today. This is because I didn't use much time on electrical devices. I hope that this has an impact on our electricity bill this month. I found this task today quite difficult because I rely on my phone, the T.V. and the iPad a lot for entertainment and for work.

Day 18 - Friday 9th of May

Today is day 18 of my blog (Friday 9th May)

Yesterday, when I was unloading the dishwasher, I noticed that it wasn't all full, with a lot of space to put more dishes. I think the  reason for this was probably because the dishes had been in the dishwasher for a while, most likely because we didn't use that many dishes. By loading all of the dishes and decreasing the amount of space, you could save a lot of money! A washing machine usually uses around 40 litres of water per load a day, which is a lot of water! I think that a lot of people should load the dishwasher fully , it will save a lot of money and water. So, today when we were washing the dishes, I made sure that the dishwasher was full with dishes.

What I did: Today for my task I made sure that the dishwasher was full before starting it.

Result: I don't think the result will be very evident at the current time, but the bill will tell if it is an effective task or not. Even though there were more dishes packed into the dishwasher, it still attained the clean standard.

Reflection: I felt good about what I did today. This is because I think that it's making a difference to the water bill. I think that this task is so simple and easy that you could do it just like that. My mum has been doing this for a very, very long time, and so now it is almost built into me. I think that I will continue to do this task from now on, because I do subconsciously.

Day 17 - Thursday 8th of May

Today is day 17 (Thursday 8th May)

Today in hard materials I was looking through my reflection sheet, when I noticed that on one lesson we watched a video and learnt about water shortages in Africa. We learn't that there was this woman in New York, who created the water wheel, so that the burden of getting water was a lot easier for woman. Reading about all of that, it made me realise just how hard water conservation is. I thought that I would try to put myself in their shoes, and conserve water as much as I could. Whether it be, taking shorter showers or turning the tap off when brushing my teeth, I did whatever I could.

What I did: Today for my task I decided to conserve water in any way I could. I took a shorter shower and only used water when I really needed it.

Result: I think that the result probably wasn't very big today because I am only doing a small thing, but, essentially that is what this unit is about. I hope that the water bill isn't as large as usual this month.

Reflection: I felt good about what I did today. This is because I didn't use much water, which is really good. Hopefully there will be a difference. I took a look at some water saving websites and found some tips on saving water. I found water conserving a little hard because nowadays, society takes water for granted. I really hope that if I keep conserving water, the bill will change by a lot.

Day 16 - Wednesday 7th of May

Today is day 16 of my blog (Wednesday 7th May)

Since I moved to my new house in late 2010, I used to drive to my primary school because it was in Pakuranga, which is a long walk from Bucklands Beach. I used to drive everyday too and from school, which uses a lot of petroleum and releases a lot of carbon dioxide (CO2). But since I started going to BBI, which is in the area, I walk too and from school everyday. Walking is a lot environmentally friendlier, since the amount of carbon dioxide released probably increased over the last two weeks, being school holidays and all. I usually walk with my friend Jed, but sometimes I walk the other way. I think that walking is a very good thing to do that will save petrol and decrease carbon emissions.

What I did: I walked too and from school everyday. This doesn't pollute the earth and is environmentally friendly.

Results: I guess the amount of carbon dioxide in the air has increased over the last two weeks, so walking will help by now releasing toxic gases into the atmosphere.

Reflection: I felt good about what I did today. This is because I know I'm helping the environment by not driving. I enjoy my walk home because it is good for getting fresh air, and it gives me the chance to talk about whatever. Though, sometimes in the Summer, it can get scorching hot, and in the Winter, It can get really cold and windy. There is also the chance of rainfall, which makes the ground wet, and if you don't have an umbrella or raincoat, you too. I think that this is a really easy and efficient task to do if you don't live too far away, another option if you live farther away is that you could bike or scooter to school instead.

Day 15 - Tuesday 6th of May

Today is day 15 of my blog (Tuesday 6th May)

Last year, for the 40 hour famine, I decided to go vegetarian for 40 hours, because I knew that a lot of animals were being killed everyday. It was quite difficult for me because my family - excluding my step mum - really like meat, whether it be chicken, beef, pork or fish. What made it worse was that they were having meat in all of their meals, my dad even went to Carl's Jr on the same day, and I was stuck eating chips. Luckily though, I made it through unscathed, and it wasn't actually as hard as I though! So, I thought, since it wasn't too hard, why not do it again? It was so simple, and we do eat rice most of the time, so it's not torturous or anything.

What I did: I had a vegetarian dinner tonight, which was really good because along with the rice I had for dinner, there was some eggs too.

Results: There really isn't any result because I have only really done this twice in my life, but I guess it would still kind of save a tiny, minuscule amount.

Reflection: I felt good about what I did today. This is because I know that I'm still saving a tiny little bit of meat, even though there is chicken in the oven. It was really simple to do because I could just eat rice, which is a staple food in my diet. I think that it was a really easy task to do and I will continue to do it in the near future.

Day 14 - Monday 5th of May

Today is day 14 of my blog (Monday 5th May)

Today was the first day back to school, and thus, the first day returning back to my blog after a well needed break! So, today I decided that for my task I would do something that my family has been doing for a long time during the winter, which is using 2 blankets at night. Using two blankets, you can save a lot of money and energy by not using heaters or electric blankets. This will make the electricity bill cheaper, but probably only about a few dollars, so it probably won't make that much of a difference.

What I did: I use 2 blankets at night when I go to sleep instead of turning on the heater or electric blanket.

Result: There probably wan't that much result because an electric heater only uses up to 15 to 30 cents per hour. It is a cost effective way to reduce money because it still kept me warm.

Reflection: I felt good about what I did today. This is because there will probably be a slight difference in the amount of the power bill. I think that this task is really easy and a lot of people could do it. I have been doing this for as long as I can remember, so it is instinctive for me to do, and I will probably continue to do this task. I think that quite a bit of people already do this, and I think that it is a really good, cost effective way to keep warm.

Day 13 - Thursday 17th of April

Today is day 13 of my blog (Thursday 17th of April)

Since yesterday was the last day of school, I had nothing to do today. Normally, school would have ended today, because tomorrow is Good Friday! But my school had a teacher's only day, so I was home by myself. I was left a long list of chores to do, which was a total bummer. In between the chores, I spent the tine watching t.v., I had to do something entertaining! One of the chores that I had to do was to wash the clothes, and then hang them out, which is a really good way to dry your clothes for energy saving. Unfortunately though, it rained today, and my efforts weren't very useful.

What I did: Today for my task I hung out the washing instead of drying it in the dryer, which is a very good way to save energy.

Results: The results weren't very successful because of the really heavy rain today, which drenched the clothes even more and did not dry them.

Reflection: I felt good about saving energy today. This is because I know that our bill won't be as expensive as if I did use the dryer, which we barely use, because we always hang out the washing. The rain unfortunately came about, and made my actions useless. Hopefully, the sun will be out tomorrow because I left the clothes outside.

Day 12 - Wednesday 16th of April

Today is day 12 of my blog (Wednesday 16th of April)

Today was the last day of school. Unfortunately though, I was still feeling a bit sick, as the aftermath of yesterday's sick day. Luckily, I was allowed to go to school, but just in case, I brought along some Panadol and Strepsils, to counter any headaches or coughs I got. When I got home, I hadn't used a single tablet! But I did realize that we were almost out of Panadol, so I told my mum after school and we went shopping. While at the supermarket, we got, along with the medicine, some groceries as well. While we were walking to the checkout, we passed the light bulbs, when my mum suddenly remembered that we needed some more of them. She looked through them, when I remembered about the Vector lady coming in to talk to us about energy saving. I remembered that she talked about energy saving bulbs, which I told my mum, and in response she replied that we already used them.

What I did: My mum and I got energy bulbs because some of the bulbs in the kitchen were blown. We've always used energy saving bulbs, which is really good.

Result: I don't think there was much of a result because we've been using energy saving bulbs for a very long time, which is a great way to save a bit of energy.

Reflection: I felt good about what I did today. This is because I know that we are saving energy by using these bulbs. I hope that this does reduce our energy usage, even just a little bit. I think that this is a really easy task to do and I will continue to do it.

Day 11 - Tuesday 15th of April

Today is day 11 of my blog (Tuesday 15th April)

Today I didn't go to school today because I was unfortunately sick. This unlucky circumstance was struck upon me yesterday, I wasn't feeling that great yesterday morning, and as the day progressed, it got worse and worse! Anyway, since I was home the whole day, and my mum was working from home to look after me, we took the time to work on the garden. I helped her by removing all of the stakes and netting from the dead plants, making the pots clear for the new plants to come. From there, I tied all of the stakes together, in bunches of 3, and proceeded to put them away in the shed. While I was doing this, my mum was re-potting her African Violets.

What I did: I helped my mum by cleaning the garden. I did this by taking out all of the stakes, then tied them up and put them away into the garden shed.

Result: This task resulted in a success because now the garden is clean and is ready to be re-seeded for season.

Reflection: I think that I really helped my mum. This is because I cleaned the garden, thus reducing the time spent for my mum in the garden, so she could get back to work. It was quite an easy task to do, but removing the netting was quite a tedious job. I think that I will probably do a similar task to this again, such as planting something. I enjoyed doing this task.

Day 10 - Monday 14th of April

Today is day 10 of my blog (Monday 14th April)

Recently, and when I say recently I really mean a few years ago, my brother stopped using a lunch box, because it was too big and bulky and he was finding it difficult to fit everything into his bag, such as his text books. So, to fix this problem, he stopped using a lunch box and converted to a plastic bag, which he could reuse multiple times, as long as it didn't get dirty! Eventually, I followed his lead and converted to using plastic bags myself, which is a good way of reusing, plus, it's environmentally friendly!

What I did: I converted to using plastic bags for my lunch because it's better than throwing it away.

Results: I think the results were successful because we don't go through as many plastic bags now than we did when we used to just chuck them out.

Reflection: I thought that what I do is good. Since we've been doing it for years now, it has reduced the amount of plastic bags thrown away. We only keep the clean ones for lunches, and put the dirty ones in a plastic bag to be used as a rubbish bag. I think that it is a good task to do and that I will keep doing it. I hope that it proves to be an effective use of reusing.

Day 9 - Sunday 13th April

Today is day 9 of my blog (Sunday 13th April)

Last night I went out to dinner at a Chinese restaurant all the way in 3 Kings. It was a General Meeting for some Cantonese society that my mum's partner's family is apart of. The start was really boring because the people were being really long-winded and boring in what they were saying. Finally the good part came, the food!!! There was heaps of food, and it was a struggle eating it all. After it was all done, there was heaps of food left over, and we thought it would be better to take it away than to waste food.

Task: The task was to take away all of the food we could so there was little to no food left over to go into the rubbish bin.

Results: The results of this task were successful because there was little food left over at the restaurant.

Reflection: I felt good today. This is because I know there is less food that is thrown into the rubbish bin. I hope that there is a small difference in how much waste I'm producing, which is a really good thing. This task was really easy and I think I will do it again.

Day 8 - Saturday 12th of April

Today is day 8 of my blog (Saturday 12th April)

Today is officially the one week anniversary of my blog! So, I decided to go back to my first task, and repeat it, to see if I can improve it in any way. I've noticed that I haven't really laid back on using electricity, and I thought that this would be a great way to start doing that! Today, I used minimal t.v. and computer because I was out most of the day, and I had to clean my room, unfortunately. So, I managed to use minimal electricity, which was really good! Again I turned off lights, the t.v. and the computer when I didn't need it, to conserve energy. I hope that the bill isn't as much as last month!

Result: Well, there isn't any result yet because we won't be getting the bill until the end of the month, but I hope that it costs less.

What I did: Again I cut down on lights, showers and washing machines. I shut down unneeded electrical goods and appliances. I closed the curtains to keep in the heat, instead of turning on a heater.

Reflection: Today I felt good about what I did. This is because I know that there will probably be a small difference in our electricity bill. I took a look at some energy efficiency sites again and found some tips on how to save energy. I found energy saving a little hard because society today relies so much on technology that even taking a day away from it is difficult, much like last time. I really hope that if I keep saving energy, the bill will change by a lot.

Day 7 - Friday 11th of April

Today is day 7 of my blog (Friday 11th April)

Yesterday, I participated in a Maugham Drive street clean up. Zoe emailed me 2 days ago, April 2nd, to be precise. I had only just noticed how messy our street was, it was littered with trash from top to bottom! I noticed it in bushes, on side walks, even some partly in the gutters! It was terrible! So, I answered yes, I had to do something about this messy street! Yesterday, at 4:30, we set out to find rubbish, encountering the strangest things! Most of the rubbish was old, unused newspaper, or little bits of Styrofoam here and there. We started at my house, and worked our way around, to the top of the street all the way to the bottom and back again. We found cans, old newspaper, and what looked like a box of some sort of uneaten food! It was disgusting! We also found a can of half empty mountain dew stuck in one of the bushes.

Task: My task was to clean up the entire street by picking up any rubbish that I saw in bushes, on side walks and on the road.

Results: The results of our clean up were a success! The street wasn't so litter scattered and there was little to no rubbish left on the side walks! Zoe and I managed to get 4 plastic bags full of rubbish in the entire street, which was quite surprising, I thought there might have been more than that!

Reflection: Today's task was a complete and total success! We managed to fill four bags with rubbish, and we found some very interesting things. I thought this was a good task to do, and I might do it again. The street looked cleaner after we went around, and I'm proud of that. I think we should take pride in our street and where we live! It's no use to not!

Day 6 - Thursday 10th of April

Today is day 6 of my blog (Thursday 10th April)

Today was a half day, like yesterday, and that meant school finished at 12 o'clock! This was due to Student Led Conferences, which is basically 3 way conferences, but the student is leading instead of the teacher. Well anyway, back to the story, since I didn't have anything to do while waiting at home for 3 or so hours until my brother got home, my step-mum picked me up and took me away to her school. From there, I spent the rest of the afternoon one on one with students, marking book after book after book. I struggled reading some of them, but luckily I was still able to decipher what they were trying to say. In the end, I managed to mark 10 books, in the time frame of 1 hour. I must admit, I'm pretty sure that's quite good for someone who isn't use to marking so many books, and who had to read each individual story very carefully, making corrections along the way!

Task: My task for today was to help my step-mum with her student's writing and marking. I wrote down the correct spelling of words, added punctuation and sorted through sentences. It was a hard task because it was a year 4 and 5 class and they didn't have very good handwriting or spelling.

Results: Again, I won't really know the results of this project, but  hopefully I have helped to lighten the load of marking for my step-mum. I hope that it is helpful!

Reflection: I think that today my task was a success! I successfully got through 10 books of marking long, slightly boring stories. I found it kind of difficult to mark the books because they didn't have very good spelling and handwriting. I had the students sit next to me and read me their stories, so I could correct spelling. One boy had such bad spelling, I couldn't decipher that he was trying to spell Egypt! It was very interesting though, the feeling of marking books just like a teacher! Although, this experience has changed the way I look at marking and teacher's jobs, it's even harder than I imagined, and definitely harder than it looks!
